Winter can be hard on asphalt pavement. Melting snow and rain gets into cracks where it freezes and expands causing the cracks to get even bigger. Water can also get under the asphalt and drain away the ground underneath the pavement – this leads to the fracturing of the asphalt and the creation of pot holes. Winter temperatures are typically too cold in many regions to pour a hot pavement mix – outside temperature should be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit for the paving mix to bond well with the existing asphalt pavement, but you can temporarily repair potholes and large cracks with a cold patch pavement mix.
